Toxicology Issues

Toxic metals pose the second worst environmental health problem in the United States according to a 300 page study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Toxic metals are widely used in industry, food processing, and agriculture and find their way into our air, food and water. Certain good habits can beneficially change your intake and uptake of toxic metals. These include eating a high fibre diet, avoiding conventional foods grown with pesticides and artificial fertilizers, and eating organic grown foods. Through our thorough diagnosis procedure we are able to tell exactly what toxic materials are present in your body and can then effectively remove them. The customized personal rejuvenation plan will take in to account your individual circumstances, providing the necessary course of action to remove these metals from your life.

Toxicology Testing Areas:

Toxicology testing in this burdened environment is mandatory. No naturopathic physician, homeopathic doctor, alternative medical physician or natural holistic healer can ignore the fact that our environment has been exploited in a way that is detrimental to our health. Toxicology testing provides us with answers about the depraved state of nature at present, it provides us with answers how to identify the chemicals, and toxins in general, and establishes the identity of the substance which alleviates the toxic condition. A practice without toxicology testing is incomplete, and will not be successful without the clinical elimination of environmental toxins.

Neurotoxins, immunotoxins

Recent articles in the medical literature have shown that the rate of cancers not associated with smoking is higher for those born after 1940 than before, and that this increase of cancer is due to environmental factors not related to smoking. We are also experiencing the new medical diagnosis of sick (closed) building syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity, both of which are known to be related to overexposure to environmental contaminants. The environmental toxins which cause the most problems are pesticides, solvents, and heavy metals.

Prevalence of environmental toxins in humans

Our environment is currently flooded with chemicals that contaminate our air, our water, our food and ourselves. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studied the toxic load in humans. The results area cause of great concern. Five chemicals - dioxin, styrene, 1-4 dichlorobenzene, xylene and ethyl phenol - were found in 100% of the samples tested.

Sources of environmental toxins

Toxicology testing reveals that both outdoor and indoor air are contaminated. The Environmental Protection Agency has documented the following chemicals as ubiquitous in the air: p-xylene, tetrachloroethylene, ethylbenzene, benzene, 1,1,1,- trichlorethane, o-xylene. Those listed as ‘often present’ were: Chloroform, carbon tetra-chloride, styrene, p-dichlorobenzene. DDE is formed by partial de-chlorination of DDT. These chlorinated pesticides are found in our food chain. Toxicology testing reveals the highest concentrations of these toxins in spinach, butter collards, pork sausage, and lamb chops.

Health Effects of environmental toxins

Accumulation of recurrent low level exposures to environmental toxins is damaging to health. Not only are cancer rates rising, but there is currently an alarming rise in the incidence if asthma. Certain environmental toxins create an estrogenic effect on wild life and possibly humans as well.

Thus the effects of environment toxins show in the nervous tissue, the glands, and the immune system.

Immunotoxicity

Environmental chemicals damage the immune system. Decreased cell mediated immunity (with a decrease in infection and tumor fighting) to increased sensitivity (allergy) and increased autoimmunity. Organochlorine compounds, abbreviated as OCC,s, like DDT, hexachlorobenzene, a chlorinated pesticide used as fungicide, perchlorethylene, damage the immune system. Poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons inhibit the function of the immune system, and are highly carcinogenic. Organo-phosphate pesticides such as polybrominated biphenyls result in lower levels of circulating T-Lymphocytes and reduced cell mediated immunity. A high prevalence of persistent skin, neurological and musculoskeletal symptoms.

Autoimmune disease

Some volatile organic compounds, as is demonstrated with toxicology testing, induce tissue specific autoimmune reactions by acting as heptanes. These low molecular-weight molecules will bind to various tissues in the body, making a new antigenic combination. An example of this is formaldehyde.

Toxin-associated cancers

Breast cancer has a very clear association with environmental chemicals. Childhood cancers have also been evaluated for epidemiological association with chemical exposure. Positive association was found between brain cancer and exposure to no-pest strips, termite treatment, Kwell shampoo (Lindane), flea collars on pets, Diazinon use in the garden or orchard, and the use of herbicides in yards. 2,4 D, a chlorophenoxy acid herbicide, gained notoriety from its combination with 2,4,5-T to form a mixture known as “Agent Orange”. It is commonly used by cities and states to spray roadways and right-of-way to keep the weeds down. It contains several dioxin contaminants. Several studies have shown associated exposure to solvents with hematologic malignancies, such as acute myelogenous leukemia, multiple myeloma, and other forms of leukemia. Workers exposed to trichloroethylene showed excess cancers of cervix, uterus, stomach, liver and brain.

Neurotoxicity:

Most of the major classes of pesticides kill as a neurotoxin. All of these agents produce various forms of damage to the nerves. For example, adriamycin affects the dorsal root ganglia, cisplatin the sensory neurons, and manganese (metal fume fever) produces a Parkinson-like syndrome.

Endocrinotoxicity

OCCs damage the endocrine organs and have a documented estrogenic effect. Aliphatic compounds (3-6 carbons in length with electronegative groups on both ends) cause necrose in the adrenals, where glucocorticoid is produced. OCCs and carbamates cause tissue degeneration. Cadmium and CCL4 have both an affinity for the hypothalamus, with decreased secretions of corticosteroids , both glucocorticoid steroids and androgenic steroids. Dioxins and mirex (used to treat fire ants) cause hypoglycemia. Compounds which inhibit thyroid function are thiourea, thiouracil, PTU, carbimazole, aniline, PABA, substituted phenols like resorcinol, phloroglucinol.
